The city and the police are jointly strengthening democracy, security and social cohesion
The city of Darmstadt and the South Hesse Police Headquarters, together with members of civil society from associations, organizations, and institutions, have founded the new association "Society and Police e.V." Its aim is to strengthen democracy and actively support state bodies such as the police, fire and disaster protection, rescue services, and civil defense through civic engagement.
The newly founded association will be chaired by Mayor Hanno Benz for the city of Darmstadt and Police President Björn Gutzeit for the South Hesse Police Headquarters.
“With the founding of this association, we are sending a strong signal for our democracy,” emphasized Mayor Hanno Benz. “Especially in challenging times, it is important to further strengthen the relationship of trust between the city's residents and the police.”
Police Chief Björn Gutzeit also emphasized the importance of the new association: “With ‘Society and Police eV’ we are focusing on dialogue, prevention and social cooperation. Security and social cohesion are shared responsibilities of the state and its citizens.”
In addition to Benz and Gutzeit, the club's board includes other well-known personalities from Darmstadt, including city councilor Paul Georg Wandrey, former Frankfurt police president Gerhard Bereswill, former Darmstadt mayor Rafael Reißer, and representatives from sports, justice and business.
The organization was inspired, among other things, by the successful model of the "Citizens and Police" association in Frankfurt am Main. Planned activities include lecture evenings, crime prevention projects, and various event formats to promote dialogue and civic engagement.
Mayor Benz and Police President Gutzeit thanked the initiators Walter Hoffmann and Rafael Reißer for their impetus to found the association and expressed their conviction: "This association will help to strengthen the feeling of security and further promote social cohesion in Darmstadt."
