Former ESA Director General talks about space and everyday technologies
On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 2 p.m., the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research you to a special lecture: Under the title "Space, Infinite Expanses," Prof. Dr. Johann-Dietrich "Jan" Wörner will examine the development of space travel. He will not only address the opportunities and limitations of exploring the universe but also demonstrate how many innovations from space travel have long since become part of people's everyday lives.

Jan Wörner has close ties to Darmstadt: After studying in Berlin and at the former Darmstadt University of Technology, he became a professor in 1990 and president of the university in 1995. He later headed the German Aerospace Center (DLR) before becoming Director General of ESA in 2015. Today, he is the director of the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) and the space coordinator for the state of Hesse.
The lecture is aimed at everyone interested in astronomy, the history of technology and the future of space travel.
