Siebel and Kaffenberger demand swift implementation in Darmstadt
The SPD parliamentary group in Darmstadt supports the current draft law to combat speculative vacancy of residential properties. The law represents an important step towards limiting rising rents and reclaiming housing, according to SPD parliamentary group leader Michael Siebel :
"Speculative vacancy also exists in Darmstadt. This law will eliminate it in the future. All measures to return unused housing to the rental market are welcome."
The SPD is demanding that the city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, begin drafting a corresponding municipal statute now, so that it is ready to act once the law is passed. "We know we are in good company," Siebel continued. The German Tenants' Association of Hesse been calling for this law for years, as there are sometimes serious vacancies in entire buildings and business units, particularly in metropolitan areas. Given the tight housing market, this is no longer acceptable.
SPD party chairman Bijan Kaffenberger adds: “Darmstadt is one of the cities with a tight housing market. As soon as the law is passed in the state parliament, the city must act. Every apartment left empty for speculation is one too many.”
The aim of the law is to give municipalities the legal basis to take active action against unjustified vacancies and to be able to sanction them.
