Why keeping your distance from animals and plants is so important – tips for nature observation
District of Groß-Gerau. The diverse landscapes in the district of Groß-Gerau – from riparian forests and orchards to dry grasslands – provide habitat for numerous rare animal and plant species. This diversity also attracts nature photographers and walkers. However, the desire to see or photograph special species can unintentionally become a problem.
The Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Groß-Gerau district urges caution: Even brief disturbances can stress sensitive animals, disrupt their breeding, or even drive them away. The hoopoe is particularly affected – with only 20 to 40 breeding pairs remaining in Hesse, it is considered highly endangered. During the breeding season, this striking bird is especially sensitive. A close-up photograph could, in the worst-case scenario, lead to the abandonment of the nest.
Tips for environmentally friendly behavior in sensitive areas:
- Observe from a distance: Observe animals only from a distance and stay on the paths so as not to disturb their habitat.
- Do not publish location details: Exact locations of endangered species should not be shared on social media to avoid visitor influx and disturbance.
- Do your research beforehand: Brochures and online information about protected areas help you to behave respectfully.
- Report observations: Anyone who discovers rare species can submit their observations via the HLNUG reporting portal:

Species conservation begins with consideration – this applies to everyone who spends time in nature. Those who behave mindfully make a valuable contribution to preserving native biodiversity.
