21 inclusive sports offers at a glance – city and clubs promote participation in sports
sports inclusion map at SG Arheilgen on Friday (April 4) . The map showcases sports opportunities for people with disabilities and aims to promote participation in sports for all citizens. Mayor and Head of Sports Hanno Benz emphasized: "Together with Darmstadt's sports clubs, we are actively working to ensure that all people, regardless of physical or mental abilities, can participate in sports in our city on an equal footing."
The current map documents 21 inclusive sports facilities in Darmstadt. It will be updated annually and is based on various measures to promote inclusion: these include recording barriers in a sports facility register , networking and advising clubs, and barrier-free renovations and new buildings such as the Hirtengrundhalle and the Nordbad .
“Thanks to the dedicated collaboration with the clubs, new opportunities have been developed, which are now made visible with the sports inclusion card. The goal is to enable everyone to access sport as a means of promoting health, rehabilitation, and a community-building experience,” Benz continued. He particularly emphasized the commitment of the clubs, which contribute to accessibility and participation .
Five years ago, the city created its first inclusive sports map as part of the MIA project ("More Inclusion for All"). The follow-up project, ViiAS ("Diverse Innovative Inclusive Sports Programs"), further developed this approach and established new inclusive programs in the city and district of Darmstadt. The number of documented inclusive sports programs has increased from 8 in 2019 to 21. The number of clubs with an inclusion contact person has also risen significantly: while there was only one such club in 2019, today around one-fifth of all sports clubs in the region have a designated contact person for inclusion.
