The pilot project aims to combine road safety, accessibility and everyday usability.
As the city of Darmstadt announced, SQUADA pilot project on Wednesday (12th) . The project, "SQUADA – Separated and safe crossing for all in Darmstadt," is being implemented in cooperation with Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and will test a so-called protected intersection that better separates road users and thus makes it safer.
A research project of nationwide importance
The project is part of a research program by the Federal Highway (BASt) commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Transport . Mobility officer Paul Georg Wandrey sees it as a strong signal for modern, balanced urban mobility.
"SQUADA stands for mobility peace – for solutions that work together. We are creating a city where traffic safety, accessibility and everyday usability are in balance."
The protected intersection is designed to organize pedestrian, bicycle, and motorized traffic in a way that minimizes mutual interference. Separating elements and optimized traffic light timing increase safety, while simulations show that motorized traffic can flow almost unchanged.
A concept with a view to the budget situation and the future
The now-approved design is easier to implement from a construction standpoint than previous versions and takes into account the requirements of budget consolidation. The insights gained from the project will later be applied to other intersections within the city.
Funding for the project is planned through the Climate and Transformation Fund – with a subsidy rate of approximately 80 percent. Implementation is still contingent upon individual approval from the Darmstadt Regional Council .
