Joint commemoration of the end of the war and strengthening of Franco-German friendship
To mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the 50th anniversary of the town twinning, a delegation from Griesheim, led by Mayor Geza Krebs-Wetzl, of Bar-le-Duc on May 8th and 9th . The delegation, consisting of approximately 40 people, participated in official celebrations, commemorative events, and friendship gatherings.
On May 8, Liberation Day, the victims of the Second World War were commemorated Place de la République Martine Joly , and her Hungarian counterpart from Gyönk, Robert Téli , Krebs-Wetzl laid a wreath – a symbol of solidarity and peace in Europe.
Ceremony to mark the town twinning and symbolic gestures of friendship
The following day, the town hall of Bar-le-Duc welcomed the guests from Griesheim to an official ceremony. Highlights included a visit to the grave of Jean Bernard , the initiator of the town twinning, and the ceremonial unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the Franco-German friendship tree in the park of Marbeaumont.
In the town hall's ceremonial hall, Mayor Krebs-Wetzl the deep and vibrant connection between the two cities:
"Half a century in which our cities have been linked in friendship – an impressive success story of European understanding and lived civic engagement."
He highlighted the role of the twinning committees , which promote intercultural exchange and personal encounters with great dedication.
The visit ended with a festive dinner at the invitation of the Baris Partnership Committee – a fitting conclusion to two days marked by remembrance, encounter and lived European friendship.
Background: Partnership with Bar-le-Duc
The partnership between Griesheim and Bar-le-Duc has existed since 1975 and is the city's oldest international connection. The French twin city is located in the Lorraine region, about 370 kilometers away, and has approximately 15,000 inhabitants. Bar-le-Duc is known for its historic old town, its role as the administrative center of the Meuse department, and its significant part in the history of Lorraine.
