Common memory of the end of the war and strengthening Franco-German friendship
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary at the end of the Second World War and the 50th anniversary of the city partnership, a delegation from Griesheim under the direction of Mayor Geta Krebs-Wetzl of Bar-LE-DUC on May 8 and 9 . With around 40 participants, the delegation took part in official celebrations, memorial events and friendship meetings.
On May 8, the day of liberation, the victims of the Second World War was commemorated Place de la République Together with the mayor of Bar-le-Duc, Martine Joly , and the Hungarian counterpart from Gyönk, Robert Téli , Krebs-Wetzl resigned-a sign of solidarity and peace in Europe.
Ceremony to the town twinning and symbolic gestures of friendship
The following day, the Bar-Le-Duc town hall received the Griesheim guests for an official ceremony. The highlights included a visit to the grave of Jean Bernard , the initiator of the city twinning, as well as the ceremonial inauguration of a plaque on the Franco-German friendship tree in the park of Marbeaumont.
Krebs-Wetzl praised the depth and lively connection between the two cities:
"Half a century in which our cities are friendly - an impressive success story of European understanding and living proximity."
He emphasized the role of the Complaint Committee , which promotes intercultural exchange and personal encounters with great commitment.
The visit ended with a festive dinner at the invitation of the Bariser Partnership Committee - a worthy conclusion of two days in memory, encounter and lived European friendship.
Background: partnership with bar-le-duc
The partnership between Griesheim and Bar-Le-Duc has existed since 1975 and is the oldest international connection in the city. The French partner city is located in the Lorraine region, about 370 kilometers away, and has around 15,000 inhabitants. Bar-le-DUC is known for its historic old town, its function as the administrative seat of the Meuse department and its significant role in the history of Lorraine.
