Friendship and tradition at the Pentecost festival - memories of common roots
The long -standing city partnership between Griesheim and the Hungarian city of Gyönk was filled with life again at Pentecost. From June 7th to 9th, 2025, a delegation from the Griesheim magistrate under the direction of Mayor Geta Krebs-Wetzl to Südungarn. Alexander Schleith was also there , which also maintains a partnership with Gyönk.
Hospitality and cultural encounters
After the arrival, the guests were warmly welcomed by Gyönk's mayor Robert Téli . A traditional wine tour through family -run basement offered space for exchange, cuisine and the expansion of partnership relationships. On Pentecost Sunday, a visit to the Pentecost service and the traditional cooking competition on the program-with Krebs-Wetzl and Schleith as jury members.
A highlight of the stay was the Pentecost festival with Danube -Swabian folk dances , which made the cultural roots of many residents visible. Special reunion: A fire truck that Griesheim and Darmstadt donated to the Gyönk fire brigade in 2019 was in action and enjoyed the best functional.
Visiting the German community and historical heritage

On the last day of the visit, the delegation stopped at the German community in Gyönk . There, a plaque at the Haus der German nationalities is reminiscent of the settlement of German families over 300 years ago . This is symbolized by a relief of a "Ulm box", with which many settlers once traveled to Hungary.
"The partnership with Gyönk is a valuable treasure," said Mayor Gefa Krebs-Wetzl . "It was justified 35 years ago, in a time of upheaval in Europe. We want to continue to maintain this connection and fill with life - for a peaceful and united Europe."
Background: Gyönk - partner city with history
The city partnership between Griesheim and Gyönk has existed since 1990 , including the Darmstadt home settlement . Gyönk is around 1,100 kilometers away in the Tolna Hügelland , has around 1,800 inhabitants and is characterized by agricultural and craft structures .
The city has a high school with a German -speaking branch, a nursing home, cultural associations and deep historical connections to Hessen. Many families from Gyönk have roots in Darmstadt and Griesheim , which makes the city twinning a particularly personal and emotional connection .
