Old town area: Pergolas and masts for non-profit projects
As part of the redesign of the old town area, the existing steel pergolas with benches and several lighting masts will be removed at the beginning of 2026. The City of Darmstadt does not want to dispose of these elements, but rather make them available to the community for reuse and is therefore calling non-profit organizations, associations, and cultural institutions to express their interest by the end of December 2025.
Steel elements from the 1970s are to continue to be used.
A total of seven lighting masts and four steel frame sections with integrated benches available for donation. They originate from the original design of the old town area in the 1970s and still characterize the area's appearance today. The city will reuse some of the elements for other projects, while the remainder are intended to be distributed as widely as possible within the community.
Planning Director Michael Kolmer emphasizes the dual benefit of the donation:
“The steel pergolas and lighting masts are relics of the 1970s and an important part of the history of the old town. By donating them to non-profit organizations, we want to create social and environmental value. Instead of disposing of the materials, they should continue to live on in places where they bring people together, foster encounters, or make art and culture visible.”
Since the elements can no longer be used in the new design concept for the old town, the city is focusing on reuse: Possibilities include seating and lounge areas , shade providers in outdoor areas , artistic installations or other creative uses.
Applications accepted until December 31, 2025 via email.
Non-profit organizations, associations, and cultural institutions interested in the steel pergolas or lighting masts can contact the city planning office by email
by December 31, 2025 stadtplanungsamt@darmstadt.de
The expression of interest should include:
- a brief introduction of the organization,
- the planned use of the elements,
- The specification of which and how many components are needed.
The City of Darmstadt will decide on the allocation based on social and environmental criteria , as well as the submitted usage concepts. The aim is to deploy the elements where they benefit as many people as possible and contribute to sustainability, a culture of remembrance, and vibrant urban spaces.
