Balloon rises 36 kilometers high – digi_space project starts again in August with available places
Bergstraße District. Taking a balloon almost to the edge of space – this special project was realized by ninth-grade students at the Starkenburg-Gymnasium in Heppenheim as part of a science course. After months of planning and several weather-related setbacks, the team succeeded in launching a stratospheric balloon to an altitude of approximately 36,000 meters . On board: several cameras and an experimental setup with milk, orange juice, and a freshly picked flower.
The research mission was carried out in collaboration with teacher Eva Nagel and Jan Fuchs , head of the digi_space in the Bergstraße district. The balloon delivered spectacular images from the stratosphere and valuable data on temperature, air pressure, humidity, and radiation. An integrated parachute ensured the safe return of the measuring instruments after the balloon's ascent burst; they were eventually recovered Etzean (Oberzent)
Experience research and technology in a practical way
The project was part of the STEM funding program and combined digital education with practical research experience . "In addition to scientific questions, the young people also learned to deal with setbacks and persevere – that's exactly what real research is all about," said Jan Fuchs. Two attempts had already been abandoned due to bad weather conditions.

The stratospheric balloon was launched emission-free and not only offered fascinating images of Earth from high altitude, but also enabled the analysis of how extreme conditions affect everyday substances. For many participants, it was their first direct contact with applied science – and an experience that left a lasting impression.
Further participation possible in the summer
Interested young people aged 15 and over will once again have the opportunity to participate in a hot air balloon launch during the summer holidays. In the fifth week of the holidays (August 4th to 8th, 2025), the digi_space of the Bergstraße district another stratospheric mission with hands-on activities for young people from across the district.
