Remembrance in the cityscape: 443 stumbling stones and two stumbling thresholds commemorate victims of the Nazi regime
Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) will be laid in Darmstadt – once again by the artist Gunter Demnig , who launched the Europe-wide project in 1992. The occasion is the 20th anniversary of the first Stolperstein laying in the city of science. This brings the total number of Stolpersteine in Darmstadt to 443 , supplemented by two Stolperschwellen (stumbling thresholds).
The first installation took place on April 11, 2005. It was initiated by Darmstadt resident Gerda Beckmann and supported by the city through its cultural affairs office. Since 2008, a volunteer working group, Stolpersteine Darmstadt, managing the project: Its members – including Jutta Reuss and Dr. Dorothee Hoppe – research life stories and present the biographies of the Nazi victims at each installation. Through their dedication, the project has become firmly established in the public consciousness of the city.
