Hornby brace crowns comeback – pictures from the game
SV Darmstadt 98 continued their unbeaten run in Berlin. After a weak start and an early 0-2 deficit, the Lilies fought back to earn a deserved 2-2 (1-2) draw Hertha BSC . In front of 35,756 spectators at the Olympic Stadium and in freezing temperatures of -13 degrees Celsius, it was Fraser Hornby who completed the comeback for the South Hessians with his brace (39th, 62nd minute). SV 98's last league defeat thus remains from the end of October.
The match started disastrously: in just the second minute, the home side capitalized on a turnover to take an early lead, with Reese beating Schuhen from close range. Berlin remained the more active team initially and extended their lead again after a quarter of an hour when Eitschberger made it 2-0 following another Darmstadt error. Darmstadt struggled initially but gradually found their footing as the game progressed.
Almost out of nowhere, new hope arose just before halftime when Marseiler was fouled in the penalty area. Hornby confidently converted the resulting penalty to pull one back. Darmstadt came out of the locker room with renewed vigor – and were rewarded: Hornby converted a cross from López in the 62nd minute to equalize. After a red card for Hertha, Darmstadt played with a man advantage, but no further goals were scored. Thus, after a hard-fought match, Darmstadt took a point back to southern Hesse.
