A spectacular match under the floodlights unfolded on Saturday evening: SV Darmstadt 98 defeated 1. FC Kaiserslautern 4-0 (3-0) and, with a convincing performance, moved to the top of the 2. Bundesliga. After just 21 matchdays, the Lilies have already reached the 40-point mark – a strong statement in the promotion race.
The home side got off to a furious start. After a foul on Luca Marseiler, the referee pointed to the spot early on, and Fraser Hornby confidently converted the resulting penalty to make it 1-0 (6'). Shortly before halftime, a set piece proved decisive: Marco Richter delivered a sharp corner into the penalty area, and Kai Klefisch headed it home to make it 3-0 (45'). Darmstadt didn't let up after the break, defending resolutely and remaining dangerous in attack.
Marseiler put the finishing touch on the victory, staying alert in stoppage time and poking the ball over the line for a 4-0 final score (90+2). With this win, Darmstadt celebrated a well-deserved home victory and go into their next match as league leaders.
SV 98's next match is on Saturday at 1 p.m. away against Eintracht Braunschweig.
