Akiyama and Marseiler decide intense home game after the break
SV Darmstadt 98 remain a force to be reckoned with at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor: With a well-deserved 2-0 (0-0) victory against 1. FC Nürnberg on Friday evening, the Lilies celebrated another home win and thus remained unbeaten in their twelfth consecutive home game , Hiroki Akiyama and Luca Marseiler became the match-winners with their goals after the break. With 37 points, the team from southern Hesse climbed to second place in the table .
The match started at a high tempo, with both teams pressing forward early. However, the teams largely cancelled each other out in midfield, and clear scoring opportunities were initially scarce. Shortly before halftime, Darmstadt's penalty area became dangerous again, but Marcel Schuhen prevented his team from falling behind with a superb reflex save.
Even after the break, the game initially struggled to find its rhythm before Darmstadt increased the pressure after about an hour. Following a cleared header, the loose ball fell to Akiyama , who fired home from outside the box to give Darmstadt the lead. Nuremberg now had to open up their play – and in the closing stages, they were caught on the counter-attack, which Marseiler calmly and confidently finished to make it 2-0. With a focused and cohesive team performance, Darmstadt secured another home victory.
