SV Darmstadt 98 made club history on Sunday: For the first time since 1988, the Lilies won an away match against Fortuna Düsseldorf . The team rewarded themselves for a passionate performance with a convincing 3-0 (0-0) victory . Hiroki Akiyama (65th minute), Fabian Nürnberger (67th minute), and Isac Lidberg (74th minute) scored for the South Hesse club.
From the very beginning, the Lilies made it clear that they weren't waiting for Düsseldorf to take the lead. After just seven minutes, Fraser Hornby had a great chance to take the lead, but Fortuna keeper Kastenmeier made a strong save. Darmstadt dominated the game, dominated the duels, and repeatedly looked for a way forward. Shortly before halftime, however, the South Hesse side had a stroke of luck: Celar had a clear shot, but Schuhen reacted brilliantly to prevent the deficit (33'). The score remained 0-0 at the break.
After the break, it didn't take long for the Lilies to convert their dominance into goals. In the 64th minute, Isaac Lidberg burst into the penalty area, laid off Hiroki Akiyama, and the Japanese player fired a powerful shot into the far corner to make it 1-0. Just two minutes later, Fabian Nürnberger added another: a diagonal ball from Pfeiffer slipped through, but Nürnberger remained cool and doubled the lead.
The deciding factor came in the 74th minute. Marseiler's curling shot was saved by Kastenmeier, but Lidberg was in the perfect position to convert the rebound for his sixth goal of the season (featured image: Photo: Arthur Schönbein). Thus, the spell was finally broken: The Lilies had finally broken the Fortuna curse after 37 years.
The result was a confident and well-deserved away win, bringing SV 98's points tally to 13 after six matchdays. All the impressions of the celebrations, goals, and scenes from the game can be found here in the photo gallery.
