SV Darmstadt 98 made club history on Sunday: For the first time since 1988, the Lilies won an away game against Fortuna Düsseldorf . The team rewarded themselves for a passionate performance with a convincing 3-0 (0-0) victory . Hiroki Akiyama (65'), Fabian Nürnberger (67') and Isac Lidberg (74') scored for the team from southern Hesse.
From the outset, Darmstadt made it clear they weren't going to sit back and wait in Düsseldorf. After just seven minutes, Fraser Hornby had a golden opportunity to take the lead, but Fortuna goalkeeper Kastenmeier made a superb save. Darmstadt dominated the game, winning their challenges and constantly pushing forward. Just before halftime, however, the visitors from southern Hesse were fortunate: Celar found himself free to shoot, but Schuhen reacted brilliantly to prevent his team from falling behind (33'). The teams went into the break with the score at 0-0.
After the break, it didn't take long for Darmstadt to convert their dominance into goals. In the 64th minute, Isac Lidberg broke into the penalty area, laid the ball off to Hiroki Akiyama – and the Japanese player fired a powerful shot into the far corner to make it 1-0. Just two minutes later, Fabian Nürnberger added another: A diagonal ball from Pfeiffer slipped through, Nürnberger remained composed and made it 2-0.
The decisive moment came in the 74th minute. Marseiler's initial shot was saved by Kastenmeier, but Lidberg was perfectly positioned to convert the rebound for his sixth goal of the season (featured image: Photo: Arthur Schönbein). With that, the spell was finally broken: Darmstadt had triumphed over Fortuna Düsseldorf after 37 years.
In the end, it was a commanding and well-deserved away victory, which increased SV 98's points tally to 13 after six matchdays. All the highlights of the celebrations, goals, and other moments from the game can be found in the photo gallery here.
