Clean streets for greater safety in autumn
Griesheim. With the arrival of autumn, the city of Griesheim all property owners to fulfill their obligation to clear leaves from sidewalks and streets. Falling leaves on these surfaces quickly create slip hazards for pedestrians and clog storm drains when the leaves are washed into the gutters.
"At the end of September, all storm drains in the city were emptied by a specialist company to ensure rainwater could drain away freely. However, since this cleaning only takes place once a year, the drains can quickly become clogged again with leaves," the city administration reports. As a result, larger puddles can form and impair street drainage.
Blind drains and proximity to trees
In some parts of the city, there are so-called "blind" catch basins , mostly near trees. These are not connected to the sewer system and serve only to water the trees in their early years . They have no debris traps and are now compacted by roots – therefore, cleaning is unnecessary.
Sweeping obligations at a glance
The obligation to sweep sidewalks and streets is regulated in the street cleaning regulations of the city of Griesheim . These regulations require property owners sidewalks and streets up to the center of the roadway . The aim is to prevent hazards and health risks and to ensure public safety.
- Timing: 8 pm on the day before a Sunday or public holiday .
- Exceptional cases: In case of heavy soiling or sudden hazards, immediate sweeping required.
- Leaf disposal: Leaves and green waste up to the size of a car trunk (approximately three blue 120-liter bags) can of free of charge at the municipal depot .
By reminding residents of their obligation to sweep their gardens, the city of Griesheim aims to contribute to ensuring road safety and preventing flooding caused by blocked drains .
