Donation enables expansion of sports activities for children and young people
The Herrngarten adventure playground in the science city of Darmstadt has been equipped with a second table tennis table. This is the city's response to the high demand for this popular recreational activity for children, teenagers, and local residents.
The purchase was made possible by a donation from the Lions Club Darmstadt-Mathildenhöhe and a private family. Both supported the Förderverein Aktivspielplatz Herrngarten eV (Herrngarten Active Playground Association) with €1,000 .
Idea from the children's and youth consultation
The impetus for the new ping-pong table came from a children's and youth consultation session at the Akazienweg youth center in the summer of 2025 with Mayor Barbara Akdeniz. There, young visitors to the adventure playground expressed their desire for another table.
“When children and young people get involved in their community and contribute concrete ideas, that sends a strong message to me,” Akdeniz explains. Supporting such initiatives is an important task for the city.
Area around play area expanded
The project was implemented in cooperation between the Youth Welfare Office – Department of Children and Youth Services – and the city's Parks and Green Spaces Department. In addition to installing the new table tennis table, the area around the existing table was also enlarged to allow for better use of both facilities in the future.
The Friends of the Herrngarten Adventure Playground Association would like to thank the donors for their support of the project, which now offers additional play and sports opportunities in the Herrngarten.
