The science city of Darmstadt is setting up a temporary pedestrian crossing on Hermannstrasse.
Darmstadt. improve the safety of schoolchildren on their way to the Ursula Fuchs School city of Darmstadt a temporary pedestrian crossing on Hermannstrasse . This will allow children to cross the street safely and reach the school entrance without risk.
The trigger was construction work on the school grounds and in Hermannstrasse, which had led to dangerous situations . The city is responding to concerns from the school and parents .
Rapid response to information from parents
“I was alerted to the situation directly by parents and went to the site the following morning to get a picture of the traffic situation at the start of the school day,” explains Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey .
“The temporary zebra crossing that has now been installed is the first result of this rapid coordination – and shows that we take action when action is needed.”
Wandrey emphasizes: “It is important to us that children can travel to school safely and independently. The temporary zebra crossing is a quick and pragmatic solution to ease the situation on site. As a city, it is our duty to act quickly where children need special protection.”
He also appeals to road users: "We ask all road users to be considerate and to drive appropriately in the vicinity of the school."
The possibility of continued operation after construction is being examined.
The temporary crossing will remain in place until construction is completed and the original traffic flow is restored. Afterwards, it will be assessed whether the zebra crossing can be made permanent .
Because the Ursula Fuchs School's catchment area is large, some parents accompany their children to school. The city is appealing to parents whose children live within walking distance to refrain from driving them to school in order to further ease the situation locally.
The city of Darmstadt is continuously working to improve school route safety education and awareness campaigns .
"The responsible behavior of all road users is crucial for the success of these measures," says Wandrey. "When children manage their way to school independently, it strengthens their self-confidence and contributes to their development and health."
