The city will commemorate the end of World War II in Darmstadt and the commitment of the US armed forces on March 25, 2025
On March 25, 1945, US troops reached the city of Darmstadt – the end of the war became a reality. Eighty years later, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, the city of Darmstadt, known for its scientific institutions, commemorated the end of World War II and the liberation from the Nazi dictatorship with a memorial event in Luisenplatz.
Hanno Benz: "Remembering means taking responsibility"
In his address, Mayor Hanno Benz acknowledged the historical significance of March 25th:
“It is our duty to remember the suffering and destruction caused by the National Socialist dictatorship and the war originating in Germany. Our remembrance also extends to the soldiers of the Allied forces who gave their lives so that Germany and its people could once again live in peace and freedom,” said Benz.
He also emphasized the importance of democracy, international understanding and solidarity – values that must be preserved today more than ever.
High-ranking US delegation visiting
The memorial service was attended by high-ranking representatives of the USA, including Deputy US Consul General Jennifer DeWitt Walsh and Colonel Troy Danderson present were Peter Franz member of the Hessian State Parliament , City Councilor Dr. Wolfgang Gehrke , and Deputy Speaker of the City Council Ulrike Schmidbauer
Following the official speeches, the flags of the USA, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the City of Darmstadt were raised in Luisenplatz. This was followed by a reception in the council chamber of the town hall, where the American guests signed the Golden Book of the City of Darmstadt .
Symbols of peace, freedom and democratic remembrance culture
With this commemorative event, the city of Darmstadt reaffirms its commitment to an active culture of remembrance. It is intended to serve as a reminder that democracy is not something to be taken for granted – but must be lived and protected every day.
