On March 25, 2025, city appreciates the end of the Second World War in Darmstadt and the commitment of the US forces
On March 25, 1945, US troops reached the city of Darmstadt-the end of the war became a reality. 80 years later, the science city of Darmstadt reminded of the end of the Second World War on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, with a memorial event on Luisenplatz and the associated liberation from the National Socialist dictatorship.
Hanno Benz: "Remembering means taking responsibility"
In his speech, Mayor Hanno Benz paid tribute to the historical importance of March 25:
"It is our duty to commemorate the suffering and the destruction that were caused by the National Socialist dictatorship and the war from Germany. Our commemoration also applies to the soldiers of the Allied armed forces, who used their lives so that Germany and its population were able to live in peace and freedom again," said Benz.
He also emphasized the importance of democracy, international understanding and solidarity - values that have to be preserved more than ever today.
High-ranking US delegation as a guest
High-ranking representatives of the United States took part in the commemoration, including the deputy US general consul Jennifer Dewitt Walsh and Colonel Troy Danderson , commander of the US army garrison Wiesbaden. The Hessian member of the state parliament Peter Franz , City Councilor Dr. Wolfgang Gehrke and the deputy city councilor Ulrike Schmidbauer took part.
After the official speeches, the flags of the United States, the Federal Republic of Germany and the City of Science Darmstadt were raised on Luisenplatz. This was followed by a reception in the magistrate hall of the town hall, in which the US guests entered the Golden Book of the City of Darmstadt .

With the memorial event, the city of Darmstadt reaffirmed its commitment to an active culture of remembrance. It is intended to remind you that democracy is not a matter of course - but has to be lived and protected every day.
