International open-air exhibition starts on April 26, 2025 in Darmstadt – art trail with ten works in public space

Tony Cragg, one of the world's most important contemporary sculptors, returns to Darmstadt with an extraordinary open-air exhibition. From April 26 to October 26, 2025, ten sculptures by the British artist will transform the Mathildenhöhe, Rosenhöhe, and the Spanish Tower Sculpture Garden into an impressive open-air gallery. Simultaneously, the Heidelberg Sculpture Park will display five additional sculptures starting May 18 – a cross-border collaboration that invites visitors to an art walk through two German states.

Art in public spaces: Darmstadt as an open-air gallery

The exhibition “Tony Cragg in Darmstadt’s Public Space” invites visitors to explore a sculpture trail approximately 1.3 kilometers long, uniquely combining nature, art, and urban experience. It begins with the work “Points of View” in front of the Mathildenhöhe exhibition building and leads via Rosenhöhe to the Spanish Tower, where further sculptures – including “Stack” – can be discovered.

The official opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in front of the exhibition building on the Mathildenhöhe. Mayor Hanno Benz, who is also the patron of the exhibition, will give the welcoming address. Visitors can experience the sculptures in the public areas around the clock; the Spanish Tower sculpture garden is open Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Nature as inspiration – works you can touch

Tony Cragg's sculptures are characterized by complex forms, diverse materials, and clear references to nature. His works explore the origin, transformation, and transience of natural and life forms – an artistic dialogue between sculpture and its surroundings. The presentation of his work in Darmstadt's public space is no coincidence: the city boasts a long history of artistic inspiration – from the Mathildenhöhe artists' colony and the Rosenhöhe New Artists' Colony to the Spanish Tower Sculpture Garden, which opened in 2020.

The exhibition will be accompanied by several guided tours. The first of these will take place on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with a joint tour led by curator Torsten Bruns, starting at the Spanish Tower, continuing via the Rosenhöhe to the Mathildenhöhe.

Further information can be found on the website of the BS Kulturstiftung Darmstadt and about the artist at www.tony-cragg.com .

Exhibition also in Heidelberg

The cross-border cooperation continues in Heidelberg: From May 18 to October 15, 2025, five works will be on display in the Heidelberg Sculpture Park, located on the grounds of the Orthopedic Clinic. A joint catalog from both locations will be published to accompany the exhibition.
