Science city of Darmstadt sets next milestone in improving school infrastructure
The city of Darmstadt celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the expansion of the Andersen School in the Eberstadt district on Wednesday, December 10th. Together with representatives from the school, City Treasurer André Schellenberg and Head of Schools Holger Klötzner acknowledged the construction progress, which paves the way for urgently needed additional capacity.
Schellenberg emphasized the importance of the project for the educational landscape: “The expansion is another important step on our path to improving school infrastructure in the science city of Darmstadt. The special steel structure, which forms the core of the construction project, has been completed and provides an opportunity to celebrate the topping-out ceremony before the building envelope is closed with prefabricated wooden walls.”
School superintendent Klötzner also emphasized the need for the expansion: “The Andersen School has grown steadily in recent years and most recently had just under 200 students. With the introduction of all-day schooling, the school needs more space to implement its educational concept. I am delighted that we can now begin the interior construction with the topping-out ceremony.”
The two-stream primary school is one of four primary schools in Eberstadt. The main building, dating from 1966, underwent extensive renovations between 2004 and 2007. The current extension, a horseshoe-shaped addition, stretches across the west wing, connects to the two-story east wing, and, upon completion, will allow for two and a half streams. This will create additional learning spaces and, in the long term, improve the facilities for all-day schooling.
