Central entrance for the town hall and several administrative offices
The science city of Darmstadt opened its new town hall foyer on Luisenstraße on Tuesday (3rd). The new area in the "Carree" will serve as the central entrance for the town hall and the departments located there.
The construction project is part of the city's long-term real estate strategy. The aim is to consolidate administrative offices more strongly in the city center, thereby improving both accessibility for citizens and the presence of the administration in the city center.
Administration as a draw for the city center
With the opening of the new town hall foyer, the city is replacing the previous entrances to the town hall with a central, barrier-free entrance. From here, all administrative departments in the town hall will be accessible in the future.
"The opening of the town hall foyer marks the beginning of a comprehensive consolidation of our locations," explains Mayor Hanno Benz. By relocating important departments from outlying areas to the city center, the accessibility of administrative services will be improved, and at the same time, a contribution will be made to revitalizing the city center.
The first floor of the new foyer will also house the economic development agency, Darmstadt Marketing GmbH, and the City Lab. This consolidation of offices is intended to strengthen collaboration between location marketing and economic development.
New service center for citizen concerns
A key feature of the new foyer is the service center of the Citizens' Representative. With the move to Luisenstraße 12, the office now has a centrally located site for the first time, in the immediate vicinity of Luisenplatz.
According to the city, the new presence is intended to strengthen citizen participation and facilitate direct contact between the city's residents and the administration.
Other administrative departments are moving to the city center
At the same time, the city is pushing ahead with the renovation of the former town hall on Grafenstrasse. Once the work is completed, the finance department and the cultural affairs office will be housed there. This will relocate further public-facing administrative departments to the city center.
Barrier-free access and central service functions
The real estate management department of the City of Darmstadt (IDA) has completely renovated and redesigned the former retail spaces in the Carree complex. Barrier-free access to all floors of the town hall was a key component of the planning.
The ground floor of the new town hall foyer includes a central reception area with directions to the departments and offices, the Darmstadt Shop with tourist information, and the service point of the citizens' representative.
The town hall foyer is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The official address of the town hall remains Luisenplatz 5 A.
