Mobility officer Wandrey: "Measures promote mobility peace and quality of life in the neighborhood"
The Darmstadt City Council, in its meeting on May 21, approved the implementation of the first measures from the traffic concept for the Lichtenbergblock area in the Martinsviertel district. This marks the beginning of the phased realization of the Heinerblock , which aims to calm traffic and improve safety and the quality of life in the neighborhood.
Originally, a one-year traffic trial was planned. Due to the current budget situation and the irreversible reorganization of parking spaces, this trial has now been cancelled. Instead, the city is starting with cost-effective immediate measures from stage 1 of the three-stage traffic concept.
Step-by-step implementation to increase acceptance
“The Lichtenberg block was chosen for the first Heinerblock project in the spirit of mobility peace. The goal is to calm traffic and increase road safety and the quality of life,” explains Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey. Implementation will take place in stages to gather experience, adjust the measures if necessary, and increase acceptance in the neighborhood.
The first measures are to be implemented in 2025, including:
- Markings and signage for safe routes to school (Lichtenbergstraße/Müllerstraße axis)
- Improved crossing points
- Establishment of one-way streets
- Reorganization of parking areas
- Promotion of car sharing services and bicycle parking facilities
Monitoring and scientific support
The city will evaluate the impact of the measures over the course of a year. Dedicated measuring devices will be used for this purpose – at no additional cost. The project will also be scientifically monitored in cooperation with the LOEWE research center emergenCity at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Sensors for recording noise, particulate matter, microclimate, and space usage will be installed to allow for before-and-after comparisons. According to emergenCity, data protection compliance is guaranteed. There will be no costs for the city of Darmstadt.
Participation and background
The transport concept is based on a resolution passed by the city council in September 2022, which commissioned a model district based on the superblocks of Barcelona. The concept was presented to the public in September 2023, followed by a citizen survey on mobility usage and district design in January and February 2024. Technically feasible feedback was taken into account.
