The impact on car, bicycle, pedestrian and public transport traffic will be examined in advance
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science, intends to continue thoroughly examining all changes to its streetscape before implementation. This involves analyzing traffic flows and, if necessary, simulating them. After each measure is completed, the actual impact will be compared with the previously calculated results.
The city cites the Eschollbrücker Straße/Heidelberger Straße intersection as an example. There, as part of a continuous cycle route towards the city center, the number of lanes for left-turning cars was reduced.
Simulation confirmed in operation
According to the city, the impact on traffic flow had already been studied before the reconstruction. Observations after implementation confirmed the simulation: the intersection functions reliably even during peak hours, and no significant traffic congestion was observed.
At the same time, the cycling infrastructure along Heidelberger Straße has been improved.
“Changes to the road network must be well-prepared. That’s why we carefully examine beforehand what impact a plan will have on traffic,” explains Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey. Simulations make it possible to realistically depict traffic flows and compare different options.
All modes of transport should be taken into account
According to the head of the mobility department, all modes of transport should be included in such planning. Improvements for pedestrian and bicycle traffic must therefore also be examined for their impact on motorized traffic and public transport.
"Safety and functionality must be guaranteed for everyone," said Wandrey. Especially at important traffic junctions, his motto is: "Thoroughness takes precedence over speed."
