Ten standard trees replace dead pines – sponsorships possible
New trees will be planted in February in the recreational area of Braunshardter Tännchen in Weiterstadt. The increasingly sparsely wooded area between the barbecue hut and the mini-golf course will receive ten standard trees to replace dead pines.

The available trees for sponsorship are hornbeam, linden, maple, and wild cherry. The sponsorships will be indicated by attached brass plaques, which are considered particularly durable and sustainable.
Difficult site conditions
Conditions in the Braunshardter Tännchen forest are considered challenging. Sandy soils, hot summers, and cockchafer larvae in the soil – known as grubs – are taking their toll on the trees. Particularly in the western area towards Büttelborn, numerous dead trees have been observed.
To give the young standard trees a better start, the environmental agency is using a special planting method. The trees are planted wrapped in sheep's wool fleece. This material decomposes slowly, releases nutrients, and is intended to keep grubs away from the roots, at least temporarily. Furthermore, the planting takes place during a phase of the grubs' development cycle when they cause the least damage.
According to the environmental agency, only one standard tree failed during the last planting campaign. The aim is to make the Braunshardt fir trees more resilient in the long term and to stabilize the forest stands.
