The city of Darmstadt is ensuring traffic safety – replacement plantings with climate-resistant species are planned
The city of Darmstadt will be carrying out necessary tree felling in the Herrngarten park starting Monday, June 17, 2025. This is due to the results of recent safety inspections, which revealed that several trees along the main paths are no longer stable or at risk of breaking. Several prominent, freestanding trees will also have to be removed.
Safety is our top priority
“The safety of our visitors is our top priority,” emphasizes Michael Kolmer, Head of Parks and Green Spaces. “Our staff regularly check the condition of the trees in the Herrngarten. Unfortunately, the latest inspection has shown that more trees will have to be felled – this is unavoidable.”
The felling work will take place gradually in the weeks following June 17th. It will be carried out by the Parks and Green Spaces Department in compliance with all nature conservation regulations.
Replacement plantings in light of climate change
Targeted replacement plantings are planned for the affected areas. Climate-adapted tree species will be used that blend well into the landscape of the Herrngarten and preserve the park as a green oasis in the long term.
Kolmer explains: “We are already thinking about the next planting seasons. With the new tree species, we not only want to replace existing ones, but also make the Herrngarten fit for the future.”
Your understanding regarding these measures is requested
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, asks all park visitors for their understanding regarding the restrictions during the construction work. The measures are unavoidable for reasons of traffic safety.
