Darmstadt expects significant relief from aircraft noise in the north of the city
As announced by German Air Navigation Services (DFS) at the Airport and Region Forum (FFR), a twelve-month trial operation to reroute the controversial departure path "Cindy S/Amtix short" will begin on Thursday, July 10, 2025. The goal: sustainable noise reduction for thousands of people in northern Darmstadt and the surrounding region.
Initial results are expected to be presented to the relevant committees after just six months. Throughout the entire test phase, the Environmental and Neighborhood Center, acting as the FFR's administrative office, will continuously analyze flight paths and noise measurements.
Kolmer: “A quantum leap for quality of life”
Environmental Officer Michael Kolmer emphasizes the importance of the project:
“I am very pleased that the trial operation can now begin promptly and before the increase in air traffic during the holiday season. The change in the flight path will relieve thousands of people in northern Darmstadt and the surrounding region from noise pollution. It is a quantum leap for quality of life and an opportunity that usually only comes around once a generation.”
The city's environmental agency will also monitor the trial operation with its own measurements. Existing municipal noise monitoring stations will be used to independently investigate the effects on the city. Particular attention will be paid to the northern edge of Wixhausen, where slight deviations from the target path were observed during the first trial in 2021.
Background: Second attempt after security concerns
A first trial operation to reroute the "Cindy S/Amtix short" route was launched in January 2021, but had to be prematurely terminated due to potential safety risks. Following extensive preparatory work by the Frankfurt Airport Noise Commission (FFR), the FFR recommended a new test phase with revised flight corridors in autumn 2024. The upcoming measure is considered a significant step towards the long-term improvement of noise protection in southern Hesse.
