Police are looking for witnesses and are giving advice on how to behave
According to police reports, a theft by deception occurred on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in the parking lot of a supermarket on Eberstädter Straße in Pfungstadt. An 82-year-old woman was the victim of a pair of as yet unknown perpetrators.
Distraction maneuvers used
According to current information, the perpetrators approached the elderly woman at around 11:15 a.m. and deliberately distracted her. One of the men drew her attention to thumbtacks allegedly lying under the car tire.
While the woman was distracted, a second perpetrator seized the opportunity to steal her wallet from her handbag, which was lying on the car seat. Both then fled with their loot.
Police are asking for information
The Darmstadt Criminal Police (K 21/22) have launched an investigation and are asking witnesses for information. Information regarding the identity of the perpetrators can be provided by calling 06151/969-0.
Police offer prevention tips
In connection with the incident, the police are warning about con artists and giving tips on how to protect yourself:
Caution should always be exercised when dealing with strangers, especially if they ask for help or point out perceived dangers. Valuables should always be kept in sight and not left openly in the vehicle.
It is also recommended to avoid distractions, keep your distance, and draw attention to yourself loudly in suspicious situations. If in doubt, the police should be notified immediately by calling the emergency number 110.
