A US World War II aerial bomb was successfully defused on Sunday
The danger posed by an unexploded ordnance in Darmstadt has been averted. On Sunday morning, the bomb disposal unit defused a 250-kilogram (550-pound) US aerial bomb from World War II, which had been found west of the North Station. This was announced by disaster relief coordinator Paul Georg Wandrey.
All cordons around the site were lifted at approximately 11:30 a.m. Residents in the evacuation zone were then able to return to their homes. The public was informed of the successful defusing of the bomb via warning apps and cell broadcast.
Mayor Hanno Benz and Head of Disaster Control Wandrey thanked the numerous emergency responders for their professional service. Participating were the professional fire brigade and the volunteer fire departments of the city of Darmstadt, the German Red Cross, the Workers' Samaritan Federation, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), as well as the federal, state, and city police and municipal authorities. A total of approximately 170 volunteers were deployed over the weekend.
The extensive preparatory and accompanying measures undertaken by the company Merck, the Darmstadt Regional Council, Deutsche Bahn and the municipal regulatory authorities had also proven effective, it was concluded.
