The current Büchner Prize winner will be a guest at the BüchnerBühne on March 9th
The Büchner city of Riedstadt continues its literary tradition: On Monday, March 9, 2026, the current recipient of the Georg Büchner Prize, Ursula Krechel , will be a guest. In a collaboration between the city of Riedstadt and the association BüchnerFindetStatt, from her latest novel , "Sehr geehrte Frau Ministerin" (Dear Madam Minister), at 7:30 p.m. in the BüchnerBühne Riedstadt .
Georg Büchner Prize on November 1, 2025, at the Darmstadt State Theatre . Now she returns to Georg Büchner's birthplace for a reading.
Advance ticket sales for the event have already begun. Tickets cost €20 in advance and are available via reservix.de. Tickets are also available at the reception desk of Riedstadt Town Hall, the BüchnerBühne Theatercafé, Faktotum Bookstore, Florales und HANDMändes Riedstadt, Bornhofen Bookstore in Gernsheim, and at the reception desk of the Groß-Gerau District Office.
In its statement of reasons for awarding the prize, the jury of the German Academy for Language and Literature praised Ursula Krechel's literary work as writing that "counters the devastation of German history and the hardening of the present with the power of its multifaceted literature." In her acceptance speech, Krechel described writing as a process of thinking, observing, and listening closely—with far-reaching consequences.
Her extensive body of work includes poems, novels, essays, radio plays, and stage plays. Her novel trilogy , "Shanghai Far From Where , "Landgericht," and "Ghost Train," is considered a key literary exploration of displacement, persecution, and return. The novel "Dear Madam Minister," , is firmly rooted in the present while simultaneously deeply interwoven with historical motifs. It focuses on diverse female characters, mother-son relationships, and spans a broad historical arc back to antiquity.
