Clean and wearable clothing ensures reuse and recycling.
As the Darmstadt Municipal Services Department (EAD) reports, the separate collection of textile waste is mandatory and crucial for a functioning circular economy in the textile sector. The goal is to reuse or recycle used textiles to the highest possible quality.
Only clean and wearable clothing should be placed in the used textile container.
The EAD (Waste Management Authority) requests that only clean, wearable clothing and shoes be placed in the used textile containers. Heavily soiled, damaged, or contaminated textiles belong in the general waste. According to City Treasurer André Schellenberg, the condition of the donated textiles significantly impacts the quality of the collection. Soiled items cannot be recycled and incur additional disposal costs.
Importance of high-quality separate collection
In Germany, around 64 percent of discarded clothing is collected via containers. After sorting, more than 90 percent of these textiles can be reused or recycled – for example, as secondhand clothing or as material for recycled products such as cleaning cloths or insulation. Since recycling capacities are currently limited and new processes are still being developed, high-quality collection is particularly important.
