A group of six donkeys is once again supporting natural regeneration in the city forest
The successful forest grazing program with donkeys in the Griesheim municipal forest will continue in 2025: Since this week, the group of six donkeys has been working forest playground Gerhart Hauptmann School , where they helped to maintain the areas heavily overgrown with reed grass.
The aim of grazing is to suppress the dense reed grass and thus promote the natural regeneration of the forest . The grazing of the grasses creates better conditions for the emergence of new herbaceous plants, shrubs, and young trees. The donkeys are an important component of an ecologically oriented management concept in the city forest.
The animals are clearly visible to visitors from the path and can be observed. However, feeding the donkeys is not permitted ; the landscape conservation farm that manages them expressly points this out.
Later this year, the donkeys will be deployed to other areas in the city forest to help promote biodiversity.
