The district of Groß-Gerau honors decades of cultural commitment
The district of Groß-Gerau has awarded its 2025 District Culture Prize to Walter Ullrich . The jury reached a unanimous decision in November. Jury members Gabriele Fladung, Heike Karcher, Claudia Weller, Horst Aussenhof, and Prof. Wolfgang Schneider thus honored Ullrich's decades of diverse social engagement in various cultural fields.
Commitment to culture, history and remembrance
For many decades, Walter Ullrich's activities have included amateur theater , the preservation of local dialect and heritage , and a strong commitment to preserving the memory of Jewish history in the Groß-Gerau district . His work as chairman of the association for the promotion of Jewish history and culture in the Groß-Gerau district has been particularly influential.
Founded in 1989, the association acquired the former Erfelden synagogue and restored it between 1989 and 1993. Since 1994, the building has served as a cultural and community center . Ullrich is also active in other locations in the district, such as the Jewish cemetery in Groß-Gerau, giving lectures and guided tours on Jewish history and regularly acting as a knowledge provider.
Another focus of his commitment is the initiation and organization of the memorial services for the Kornsand crimes , which keep alive an important chapter of the regional culture of remembrance.
Award ceremony planned for March 2026
The award ceremony for the 2025 District Culture Prize is scheduled for Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Georg Büchner Hall of the Groß-Gerau District Office . The laudatory speech will be given by Prof. Wolfgang Schneider.
