General decree comes into force on June 27 – protection of waters due to persistent drought
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, is prohibiting the extraction of water from surface waters from Saturday, June 27, until further notice. The city announced that this general order is being issued due to the ongoing heat, drought, and falling water levels. This action was coordinated with the neighboring district of Darmstadt-Dieburg.
The measures affect streams, ponds, and lakes within the city limits. The aim is to protect the water bodies and their flora and fauna from the effects of the ongoing drought.
Protection for animals and plants
"Due to the current weather conditions, the water levels of the streams are falling below the critical low-water flow threshold. With this regulation, we aim to limit a further drop in water levels within the city limits. This is of paramount importance for the protection of our waterways and, above all, for the flora and fauna in and around the waterways, as the low water levels, combined with the warming of the water, rapidly deteriorate living conditions for these organisms," explains Environmental Officer Michael Kolmer.
The general order does not apply to watering livestock or drawing water with hand-held containers as part of public use. Also unaffected are permitted uses of water bodies based on water rights permits, authorizations, or existing rights.
City calls for water conservation
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science, is also appealing to its residents to use water as sparingly as possible. Watering lawns can often be avoided, as they usually recover quickly after periods of drought.
Sensitive plants should ideally be watered in the early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation. The city recommends watering the soil directly, rather than the leaves. This also helps prevent fungal infections and damage from strong sunlight. Where possible, collected rainwater should be used.
