Young people from intensive classes at the Martin Buber School talk on the radio about their homeland, hobbies and favorite dishes
Fourteen young people from the intensive classes at the Martin Buber School in Groß-Gerau produced their own one-hour radio program "We Make Radio!" the Groß-Gerau district youth education center , the Groß-Gerau municipal youth services , and the Radio Rüsselsheim media education center .
The young participants, aged 12 to 16, come from various countries of origin and are currently intensively learning German. Despite initial language barriers, they created a diverse radio magazine that was broadcast on Radio Rüsselsheim . Four of the teenagers even hosted the program live.
Personal stories and exciting interviews
The program's topics ranged from personal interests like football, music, and leisure activities to the culture and cuisine of the participants' countries of origin . Expert interviews featured, among others, a football coach, a restaurant owner, and a travel agent. For instance, the Persian restaurant explained the differences between Iranian and Afghan cuisine – including appetizers for curious listeners.
A particular highlight was an interview about the Groß-Gerau swimming pool , which not only provided information about its services but also gave the young people the opportunity to ask questions in a professional setting – and to be taken seriously.
Media literacy meets community
In addition to the content, the acquisition of new skills was a key focus. The young people learned how to use laptops, microphones, and editing software , gained initial experience in live presentation, and noticeably surpassed their own expectations in the process. During breaks, they took advantage of the recreational opportunities at the Anne Frank Youth Center , which, besides a recording studio, also provided rooms for sports and games.
The feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive:
"I learned new words."
"I can use my laptop better."
"I had a great time with my friends."
And: "Thank you for the wonderful time – it was a good experience."
