Party emphasizes importance of prevention and demands interplay of social and security policy
Alliance 90/Die Grünen Darmstadt have commented on the current discussion about the introduction of an weapon ban zone in the city center. In a press release, the party explains that it can basically understand the underlying intention, but only sees the measure as one of several components to improve security.
"Our politics aims not to let crimes arise in the first place," emphasizes party spokesman Heiko Depner. From the Greens' point of view, it was crucial to act preventively at an early stage - in interaction with the police, city administration and social actors. At the same time, the party admits that prevention alone is not enough: "Then there are clear answers," said Depner.
Criticism of "simple solutions"
The background to the debate is a ten-point plan for public security that was already adopted between the city and the police last year. Among other things, this includes joint stripes, video surveillance and measures against fear dreams. The Greens support this catalog of measures, but in particular see video surveillance critically.
"Video surveillance can contribute to clarification, but rarely prevents crimes and often only leads to relocation, for example in drug trafficking," says the message. Parking garages would also be perceived as anxiety - even if no concrete crimes were carried out there. The Greens therefore call for increased security measures by the operators of these facilities.
Security must not lead to discrimination
The Greens also warn that all people should be treated equally before the law. "Checks must be relatively, justified and free of discrimination," says Depner. This is the only way to secure confidence in the state and its institutions in the long term.
Security through social balance
The party advocates a balanced relationship between security and social policy. "A safe city is not created by a large gesture, but by many small adjustment screws," said the Greens. Prevention, visible presence, clear rules and offers for social participation would have to go hand in hand.
With this positioning, the party emphasizes that security cannot be guaranteed solely by monitoring and control, but by a comprehensive concept that includes social aspects.
