The party emphasizes the importance of prevention and calls for a synergy between social and security policies
The Darmstadt branch of the Green Party (BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN) has commented on the current discussion surrounding the introduction of a weapons-free zone in the city center. In a press release, the party stated that it understands the underlying intention in principle, but views the measure as only one of several components for improving security.
“Our policy aims to prevent crimes from occurring in the first place,” emphasizes party spokesperson Heiko Depner. From the Greens' perspective, it is crucial to act preventively at an early stage – in cooperation with the police, city administration, and social service providers. At the same time, the party acknowledges that prevention alone is not enough: “Then we need clear answers,” says Depner.
Criticism of "simple solutions"
The debate stems from a ten-point plan for public safety adopted last year between the city and the police. This plan includes, among other things, joint patrols, video surveillance, and measures to combat areas perceived as unsafe. The Green Party supports this set of measures but is particularly critical of the video surveillance.
"Video surveillance can contribute to solving crimes, but it rarely prevents them and often only leads to a shift in crime, for example in the case of drug trafficking," the statement reads. Parking garages are also perceived as places of fear – even if no specific crimes are committed there. The Green Party is therefore calling for increased security measures by the operators of these facilities.
Security must not lead to discrimination
The Greens also emphasize that all people must be treated equally before the law. "Checks must be proportionate, justified, and non-discriminatory," says Depner. Only in this way can trust in the state and its institutions be secured in the long term.
Security through social balance
The party advocates for a balanced approach to security and social policy. "A safe city isn't created through one grand gesture, but through many small adjustments," the Greens argue. Prevention, visible police presence, clear rules, and opportunities for social participation must go hand in hand.
With this position, the party emphasizes that security cannot be guaranteed solely through surveillance and control, but through a comprehensive concept that also considers social aspects.
