A weapons-free zone Luisenplatz since June 5, 2025. The corresponding legal ordinance is now in force, and the signs have been erected. This measure aims to increase public safety and better protect the population. It is the result of close cooperation between the city and the police.
“The goal is to provide the greatest possible protection for the public,” emphasizes Head of Public Order Paul Georg Wandrey . “The weapons-free zone is a necessary and consistent step towards increasing safety on Luisenplatz. It complements existing measures such as video surveillance and increased police presence – and sends a clear signal against violence in public spaces.”
Police checks and their preventive effect
The implementation will be carried out in close coordination with the police. Police Chief Björn Gutzeit described the new regulation as "an important component of the security architecture." The police will conduct targeted checks . The new regulation prohibits carrying any weapons or knives , regardless of size or blade length – except in cases of proven legitimate interest (e.g., for professional purposes or sports).
Criminal offenses as the basis for the ban
The legal basis is Section 42, Paragraph 5 of the Weapons Act. According to this, a weapons-free zone is possible if serious crimes have been repeatedly committed in a specific area. The statistics show:
- 2023 : 84 assaults, 3 robberies, 12 threats, 5 sexual offenses, 1 crime against life – 9 of which involved weapons or knives
- 2024 (until June) : almost 70 relevant offenses, including 7 involving knives.
A time-of-day-limited ban is not possible
Since the offenses were committed during the day and at night around the clock . According to the city, the high volume of people and the frequent encounters with intoxicated or drug-impaired individuals further increase the risk.
