VSR-Gewässerschutz will be accepting samples on the market square on August 4th
Groß-Gerau. The yellow mobile laboratory of VSR-Gewässerschutz (VSR Water Protection) is making another stop in Groß-Gerau. On Monday, August 4, 2025, owners of garden wells can submit their water samples for analysis between 3 and 5 p.m. at the market square . The non-profit organization is once again offering the opportunity to have water tested for contaminants such as nitrate, acidity, and salinity.

Last year, there was already a great deal of interest – over 130 people brought samples to the information booth. The basic analysis is carried out directly in the mobile laboratory and costs €12. The evaluation is performed on-site by the team led by Milan Toups and Georg Stüker, who are also available to advise on water use in the garden. Additional parameters can be tested for an extra charge, such as the suitability of the water for paddling pools, ponds, or as emergency drinking water.
Stresses often not visible
According to VSR-Gewässerschutz (Association for the Protection of Water Resources), well water is often contaminated with nitrates, pesticides, or pathogens – without this being visible or detectable by smell. Therefore, analysis is important, especially when using it for vegetable gardens or children's pools.
For a meaningful analysis, it is recommended to use PET bottles (0.5 liters, filled to the brim) 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at +49 2831 9763342 .
Presentation and regional nitrate map
For the first time, the association will be showing a screen presentation on nitrate pollution in the Groß-Gerau district at its information stand. An interactive nitrate map for Hesse, featuring results from previous measurements, is also available online:

Tips for saving water in the garden
In addition, the association provides practical tips on the sustainable use of well water . For example, watering should be done in the morning or evening to avoid evaporation. A conscious decision regarding the size of paddling pools is also worthwhile: "The smaller the pool, the less water is needed," emphasizes Georg Stüker.
Background: VSR water protection
The VSR-Gewässerschutz (Association for the Protection of Water Resources) was founded in 1980 and is active throughout Germany. The organization conducts analyses of well and stream water, but relies on the cooperation of citizens for groundwater samples.
