DA.news supports journalistic project of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences
What motivates young people in Darmstadt and the surrounding region? Students of online journalism at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (h_da) are currently exploring this question. In the summer semester of 2025, under the project title "Was DA los" (What's Happening DA), they are developing an online magazine and publishing a variety of articles, reports, and interviews on local topics. The editorial team at DA.news finds the project particularly exciting and is looking forward to sharing selected articles with a wider audience on their own platform.
From "Culture and Junk" to "DAX and Toads"
Around 25 sixth-semester students from the student editorial team have organized themselves into the sections "DA wird's politischen" (politics), "DAx und Kröten" (business), "Kultur und Krempel" (panorama), and "DA bewegt" (sports). In addition, there is a production team that designs the website and the Instagram account. The articles focus not only on classic local topics but also on unusual perspectives, personal stories, and creative approaches.
on the project website www.was-da-los.de – from current developments to in-depth questions: How do students manage to make ends meet with BAföG (German student financial aid)? Why was the HeinerLiner bus service discontinued on weekdays? Or is hiking also an interesting leisure activity for young people? Current posts are also available on Instagram.
A project that creates perspectives
The editorial team at DA.news is supporting the project and also publishing selected articles on its own website. This aims to give the young voices a wider reach – and to demonstrate how vibrant and engaging journalistic training in Darmstadt can be.
Stephan Köhnlein, lecturer for online journalism at h_da, and Viviane Schmidt, who works with the teams as a student tutor, are responsible for the project.
The editorial team at DA.news looks forward to many worthwhile articles – and invites readers to regularly follow “What’s going on in DA” and thus gain an insight into the journalistic work of the next generation.
