Sound performance with Denise Frey at the Dazz Festival in the Künstlerkeller
What do spaces sound like that we usually only see? Darmstadt musician Denise Frey in her project "What Does Darmstadt Sound Like?" The sound performance can on Saturday, January 17, 2026 8:30 p.m. in the Künstlerkeller (artists' cellar) at the castle as part of the Dazz Festival .
Sound experiments in Darmstadt buildings
For her project, Denise Frey made recordings in prominent buildings in the science city of Darmstadt. She improvised her approach, exploring the acoustics, atmosphere, and mood of each space. The resulting tensions and tonal colors flowed directly into her creative process.
“We know many of the buildings used through our eyes, but we often only perceive how they sound peripherally,” Frey describes the approach of her project.
Live electro-acoustic ambient music
In her concerts, Denise Frey combines live saxophone with electronic production to create electro-acoustic ambient music. Using saxophone, MPC, effects units, and a keen ear for sound, she creates live improvised soundscapes that invite the listener to listen, let go, and relax. The music is created spontaneously in the moment and remains deliberately open and organic.
