Hanno Benz: “Performance at the Theater im Pädagog is unacceptable”
Darmstadt. "To Kill a War Machine" scheduled for August 17 .
The film follows the British group "Palestine Action," which, according to Benz, aims to destroy the British arms industry in order to weaken Israel militarily. The group was recently designated a terrorist organization by the British House of Commons. Any expression of solidarity is now punishable by severe penalties in Great Britain.
Concerns about glorification of terrorism
According to the mayor, the documentary glorifies violence and encourages imitation without incorporating critical voices or self-reflection. The promotion of the screening by the group "Darmstadt for Palestine" also suggests that no critical discussion of the content is intended.
Benz warned of an "acute danger of glorifying terrorism" and questioned whether "Darmstadt for Palestine" sympathized with terrorist organizations. He pointed out that the group had sold keychains featuring a red triangle, which Hamas uses as a target marker, at the "Anti-Colonial Peace Christmas Market" in the Protestant St. Michael's Church. According to Benz, this incident is currently under criminal investigation.
Deadline for cancellation set
"As the landlord, you are responsible for what is shown in your premises," Benz emphasized. He called on the operator to exercise his right to refuse entry and to refrain from the screening. The city expects the event to be canceled by 11 a.m. on Friday, August 15.
