City reminds residents of their duty to ensure traffic safety in snow and ice
During the cold season with snow and ice, winter road maintenance and traffic safety take on particular importance. The aim is to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all road users within the city limits.
Last week, city maintenance workers were out early in the morning clearing snow from streets throughout the city. Due to the current weather conditions and several reports from residents, secondary roads were also cleared. This decision was made in close consultation between the city administration and the operations management team, as the existing layer of ice posed an increased hazard.
Obligations of property owners
The street cleaning and fee regulations of the city of Weiterstadt stipulate that residents must also fulfill their responsibility when it snows or ice forms. The cleaning obligation and winter maintenance therefore include not only the streets cleaned by the city itself, but also, in particular, the sidewalks along private properties.
These footpaths must be cleared and kept safe for traffic by the respective residents.
Clearing and spreading grit in icy conditions
In snowy or icy conditions, paths must be cleared to ensure traffic safety. Abrasive de-icing agents such as sand or grit must be used on slippery surfaces. Salt may only be used in small quantities and exclusively where absolutely necessary.
The reliable clearing and gritting of sidewalks not only serves public safety but is also part of the legal duty to ensure traffic safety. Failure to comply can have legal consequences.
Request from the city administration
The city administration therefore requests that all those responsible for snow removal regularly check whether the sidewalks in front of their property or their assigned areas are adequately cleared. Anyone who is unable to do so themselves should arrange for someone to cover their duties in a timely manner.
The city of Weiterstadt thanks its citizens for their support and is happy to answer any questions.
