An initiative puts female architects, engineers, planners and craftswomen in the spotlight – with events, role models and building projects that are making urban history.
#FrauenBauenDarmstadt is an initiative dedicated to increasing the visibility and networking of women in the construction industry. It is part of the nationwide Women in Architecture 2025 (WIA25) , which takes place from June 19 to 29, 2025, and highlights the achievements of women in architecture, interior design, urban and open space planning, as well as construction and civil engineering.
Visibility through video statements
A key element of the initiative is the collection of video statements from women in various fields within the construction industry. These videos offer insights into the perspectives and experiences of female architects, urban planners, civil engineers, and tradespeople. The aim is to highlight the diversity and expertise of women in the sector and to present inspiring role models.

The history of women in the construction industry in Darmstadt stretches far back. Franziska Braun was the first woman to enroll in architecture studies at the Technical University of Darmstadt (now TU Darmstadt) in the winter semester of 1908/09. Although she did not complete her studies, she was honored in 2013 with the naming of a street on the Lichtwiese campus. Furthermore, since 2011, TU Darmstadt has awarded the Franziska Braun Prize to recognize outstanding achievements in promoting gender equality.
Women-friendly building in Darmstadt
A significant example of women-friendly housing in Darmstadt is the residential project on Vilbeler Weg . This project was initiated in 1991 and completed in 1998. It originated from a competition aimed at creating housing specifically for working women and mothers. The design placed particular emphasis on the needs of women and promoted communal living.
New construction of the women's shelter
In March 2025, the Darmstadt City Council approved the construction of a new women's shelter in cooperation with bauverein AG. The new building will increase the shelter's capacity from 13 to 17 places for women and their children.
