An initiative moves into the spotlight of architects, engineers, planners and craftsmen - with events, role models and construction projects.
#Frauenbauendarmstadt is an initiative that is dedicated to the visualization and networking of women in construction. It is part of the nationwide festival Women in Architecture 2025 (Wia25) , which takes place from June 19 to 29, 2025 and illuminates the achievements of women in architecture, interior design, urban and open space planning as well as construction and engineering construction.
Visibility through video statements
A central element of the initiative is the collection of video statements by women from various areas of construction. These videos offer insights into the perspectives and experiences of architects, urban planners, civil engineers and craftsmen. The aim is to make the diversity and competence of women visible in the industry and to present inspiring role models.
Network event at the Alice monument
On June 28, 2025, #Frauenbauendarmstadt invites you to a network event at the Alice monument in Darmstadt. This event offers a platform for the exchange and networking of women in construction. It is part of the Wia25 festival and aims to promote direct dialogue and cooperation among women in the industry.
Historical perspective: Franziska Braun
The history of women in construction in Darmstadt goes far back. Franziska Braun was the first woman who was regularly involved in studying architecture in the winter semester 1908/09 at the Technical University of Darmstadt (today TU Darmstadt). Although she did not complete her studies, she was honored in 2013 with the naming of a street on the Lichtwiese campus. Franziska Braun Prize every two years since 2011 to appreciate outstanding achievements in equality.
Women -friendly building in Darmstadt
An important example of women -friendly building in Darmstadt is the residential project on Vilbeler Weg . This project was initiated in 1991 and completed in 1998. It emerged from a competition with the aim of creating living space especially for working women and mothers. Planning placed particular emphasis on the needs of women and promoted community living.
New building of the women's shelter
In March 2025, the magistrate of the science city of Darmstadt decided to build the new women's shelter in cooperation with Bauverein AG. The new building will increase the capacity of 13 to 17 protective places for women and their children so far. Construction is planned for the end of 2025, the completion for December 2026.
Cinema film over Eileen Gray on June 23rd
A special highlight as part of #Frauenbaugendarmstadt is the demonstration of the film "Ein Meisterwerk" on June 23, 2025 . The documentation portrays the iconic house E.1027 by the architect Eileen Gray and impressively shows her visionary work and its influence on modern architecture.
#Frauenbaugendarmstadt is more than one initiative; It is an expression of the commitment to equality and visibility of women in construction. Through events, historical processing and concrete construction projects, the role of women in architecture, urban planning and craft is recognized and strengthened. The initiative shows how important it is to give women a voice and platform in all areas of building.
