City improves traffic safety without one-way streets
Following suggestions from residents and the Arheilgen sports club, the traffic situation on Woogsweg in the Darmstadt-Arheilgen district will be improved. As the city of Darmstadt announced, the road surface will first be repaired and new markings applied. A one-way traffic system is not planned for the time being.
Mobility officer Paul Georg Wandrey emphasizes that the concerns raised by residents have been taken seriously. The goal is a solution that increases safety without causing unnecessary detours. They are proceeding deliberately step by step and have carefully weighed the various interests involved.
Important connection in the district
The Woogsweg is a key route – especially to the Arheilgen sports club, the daycare center, and the Arheilgen mill. In recent years, the lack of a sidewalk and the resulting conflicts between pedestrians, cyclists, and motorized traffic have been repeatedly pointed out.
In the first phase, in 2026, the road surface in the section between Jakob-Jung-Straße and the junction with the existing sidewalk will be completely renewed. In addition, the shoulder area will be reconstructed and marked. Pedestrian pictograms and corresponding signage will clearly indicate that this area is primarily for pedestrian traffic.
Further steps possible
Once the measures are completed, the effects will be monitored and evaluated. If additional structural modifications are necessary, a more pronounced separation of the sidewalk could be implemented as a second step. Only then would a one-way street system be considered.
Approximately 100,000 euros have been budgeted for the renovation of the first section.
