The working group "Senior-Friendly Bergstraße District" has selected the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lorsch Abbey and the Lauresham Open-Air Laboratory as the excursion destination of the month for June. As the Bergstraße District Senior Citizens' Advisory Board reports, the recommendation is aimed particularly at senior citizens and their relatives. The historic site offers the opportunity to discover more than 1,200 years of history and is one of the most important cultural monuments in the region. A tour of the World Heritage Site: In addition to the famous King's Hall, the World Heritage Site includes the church fragment, the abbey wall, the herb garden, Altenmünster Abbey, the museum center, and the tithe barn exhibition depot. A circular route connects numerous stations and provides insights into the history of the early medieval abbey and the development of the site. Many areas of the World Heritage Site, including the abbey grounds, the herb garden, and Altenmünster Abbey, are freely accessible daily until dusk, year-round. Open-air laboratory showcases life in the early Middle Ages. Complementing the historical tour, the museum center offers information on the history of the monastery and regional cultural history. Among other topics, the once significant tobacco cultivation in the region is explored. At the Lauresham open-air laboratory, visitors also gain vivid insights into life and work in the early Middle Ages. Those wishing to delve deeper into the history can participate in public tours or book group tours. Events and hands-on activities: The Lorsch Abbey World Heritage Site regularly offers events, workshops, and hands-on activities for various age groups. Advance registration is recommended for groups. Further information and booking options are available on the monastery's website at kloster-lorsch.de. Historic old town invites visitors to linger. The area surrounding the World Heritage Site also makes Lorsch an attractive destination for a day trip. The historic town center with its market square, town hall, restaurants, and ice cream parlors offers numerous opportunities for leisure activities. The peony garden on the grounds of the Protestant church is particularly worth seeing. The flowering season typically lasts until mid-June. The garden also makes a connection to the famous Lorsch Pharmacopoeia.
