Effective April 1, 2025, Professor Dr. Philip Wenzel will assume leadership of the Department of Cardiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine at Darmstadt Hospital. He succeeds Professor Dr. Gerald Werner, who has successfully led the department since 2005 and, during this time, developed it into a nationally recognized center for interventional coronary treatments. A look back at an era – Professor Dr. Gerald Werner retires. With his decades of expertise, Professor Dr. Werner significantly shaped the development of interventional cardiology in southern Hesse. In particular, the treatment of chronically occluded coronary arteries brought Darmstadt Hospital international renown under his leadership. Hundreds of physicians were trained here, and international conferences also valued his expertise. Despite advances in prevention, he emphasizes that the risk of cardiovascular disease remains high. The hospital's management acknowledged Werner's contribution to positioning the clinic as a maximum care provider and thanked him for his extraordinary commitment. Prof. Werner will remain connected to medicine and will work as a consultant for complex coronary interventions at the University Hospital Frankfurt starting in May 2025. Prof. Dr. Philip Wenzel brings new impetus. With Prof. Dr. Philip Wenzel, the Darmstadt Hospital gains a renowned expert in heart failure, interventional cardiology, and intensive care medicine. The Freiburg native was most recently Deputy Director at the University Hospital Mainz. He stands for modern cardiac medicine, research excellence, and patient-centered care. Prof. Wenzel plans to expand the clinic's existing areas of focus – including structural heart disease therapy, telemedicine, and close cooperation with physicians in private practice. He is also committed to expanding interdisciplinary projects in Darmstadt – for example, with vascular surgery, anesthesiology, or neurology. Science and practice closely linked: Prof. Wenzel is active in numerous professional societies and, with over 190 scientific publications, is one of the most research-intensive cardiologists in Germany. His scientific work focuses, among other things, on systemic inflammation and new treatment concepts in cardiology. With its new director, the Darmstadt Clinic considers itself well-prepared for the challenges of hospital reform and future demands on maximum care in southern Hesse.
