With the exhibition "Piece by Piece – Perspectives on Darmstadt's City History," the Darmstadt City Archives will present selected milestones of the city's history from historical, artistic, and personal perspectives, starting Monday, June 29, 2026. The exhibition will be on display at the House of History until September 25. Archival items tell of change and development. More than 30 different exhibits from various eras illustrate Darmstadt's eventful history. Significant developments in the city are presented in five thematic stations using original archival items. Among the exhibits is a metal sign from the Reconstruction Company, representing Darmstadt's reconstruction after the Second World War. A banner from the 1980s recalls the social protest movements of that time. A miniature model of Darmstadt's landmark "Langer Lui," designed by Gerhard Roese, is also part of the exhibition. “With this exhibition, the Darmstadt City Archives demonstrates that it is a place of remembrance and communication of Darmstadt's urban history, playing a crucial role in understanding Darmstadt's urban development. The archival items illustrate the paths and upheavals that Darmstadt has experienced and convey what still shapes the city today. From this, one can not only derive the unique atmosphere of life in Darmstadt, but also a confident outlook for the future,” explains Mayor and Head of Cultural Affairs Hanno Benz. Students research exhibition objects. The exhibition was created as part of a collaborative project with the Technical University of Darmstadt. Students from the fields of history and architecture independently researched selected exhibits. The results of their academic work are part of the exhibition and will also be published digitally by the City Archives. Special guided tours during the Heinerfest. The exhibition opens on Monday, June 29, at 6 p.m. After a welcome address by Mayor Hanno Benz, the head of the Darmstadt City Archives, Dr. Sandra Zimmermann, will introduce the exhibition. The City Archives is offering several accompanying events. Special guided tours will take place during the Heinerfest on Friday, July 3, at 3 p.m. and on Saturday, July 4, at 2:30 p.m. In addition, the city archives invite you to a historical games night on Thursday, August 20, at the Gastspielhaus (Gate Theater) at Heinheimer Straße 53.
