Project "Fire Blore Disinformation" conveys media literacy and strengthens volunteering
The Griesheim youth fire brigade is one of the six selected locations in Germany that take part in the “Fire Herd Disinformation” project. The Correctiv reporter factory in cooperation with the German Youth Fire Brigade (DJF) sets a sign against targeted false information online - and at the same time makes the commitment of young firefighters visible.
From summer 2025, three interactive workshops for young people from the volunteer fire brigade will be offered in Griesheim, which are intended to strengthen media literacy and promote dealing with social media.
Learn young people to recognize and expose disinformation
The workshops are directed by journalists from the correctional reporter factory. In the units, the young people learn, among other things, how content spreads on TikTok & Co., as you can see disinformation, identify serious sources and research and design their own content. The aim is to strengthen young people in dealing with digital content and enable them to create their own contributions - also about their everyday life at the youth fire brigade.
Two workshops take place between July and November 2025, a third in the spring of 2026. In addition to Griesheim, Magdeburg-Olvenstedt (Saxony-Anhalt), Schauenburg Hoof (Hesse), Frankenholz (Saarland), Schöneiche & Woltersdorf (Brandenburg) and Hamburg-Lohbrügge are also included.
Background: with media literacy against attacks on emergency services
The starting point of the project is the increasing confrontation of rescue workers with hostility and attacks - often fueled by false information online. "Fire stove disinformation" comes in right there: it should promote trust in democratic structures and strengthen the resilience of young people compared to digital manipulations.
The project is funded by the federal program "Live democracy!" of the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth.
Background:
The German youth fire brigade is the youth organization of the German Fire Brigade Association and, with around 350,000 members, is one of the largest youth organizations in Germany. In addition to the fire brigade training, the focus is on values such as team spirit, helpfulness and participation.
