Mathias Wagner: “Democracy is not a spectator sport – it must be lived.”
On May 8th, the day of liberation from National Socialism and the end of the Second World War in Europe, the Hessian state parliament group of BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN calls for increased democratic engagement.
“We celebrate May 8th as the day of liberation from Nazi tyranny and as a reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust,” emphasizes parliamentary group leader Mathias Wagner. The day commemorates the historical turning point that led Germany to freedom – but also reminds us how dangerous indifference towards democracy can be.
Wagner warned against normalizing far-right narratives in society: “Democracy is not a spectator sport or a delivery service. It thrives on participation and on being defended and shaped by all of us.”
May 8th shows how important a culture of remembrance is: "Without remembrance, we lose our future. Those who forget the lessons of history risk a repeat of authoritarian developments."
In view of increasing anti-democratic tendencies, the Greens call for people to take a stand and actively protect the free and democratic basic order.
