Mathias Wagner: "Democracy is not a viewer - it has to be lived"
On May 8, the day of the liberation from National Socialism and the end of the Second World War in Europe, the Hessian state parliamentary group of Bündnis 90/The Greens is calling for increased democratic commitment.
"We celebrate May 8th as the day of liberation from the National Socialist tyranny and as a warning to the horrors of the Holocaust," emphasizes Group Chairman Mathias Wagner. The day reminds of the historical turning point that Germany led to freedom - but also of how dangerous indifference to democracy could be.
Wagner warned against normalizing right -wing extremities in society: "Democracy is not a viewer and also not a delivery service. She lives from participating and that it is defended and shaped by all of us."
May 8th shows how important memory culture is: "Without memory, we lose our future. Those who forget the teachings of history risks that authoritarian developments are repeated."
In view of the increasing democracy and tendencies, the Greens call up to show attitude and actively protect the free-democratic basic order.
