The Swiss bestselling author will open the new season of the series "Two shops let you read" on August 31st
Author Alex Capus will read from his new novel "Querfeldein" in Darmstadt on Monday, August 31, 2026. The reading begins at 7:30 p.m. in Darmstadt's city church and opens the autumn season of the "Two Shops Host Readings" event series. Admission is €15.
"Querfeldein" was published by Carl Hanser Verlag in August 2026. At the event, Capus will not only read from the novel but also talk about its creation.
Alex Capus reads in Darmstadt about a village on the border
The story "Querfeldein" centers on the young innkeeper Arnold, who runs an inn in a Swiss village on the border with Germany about a hundred years ago. He marries the foreigner Betty, with whom he has eight children. Years later, his eldest daughter Clara falls in love with the smuggler Hermann.
The story takes place in 1933. Hermann comes into conflict with uniformed men on both sides of the border, eventually leading to a drama and the village standing up against a major power.
The reading is the first of ten events taking place this autumn at four different locations. The series "Two Shops Bring Readings" is organized by Imke Karrock of the Büchergilde bookstore on the market square and Judith Kautz of the Bessunger bookstore, and supported by Leseland Hessen.
